Biography

In 2010 on realizing that no platform existed where the artists of Indian origin could collect and showcase their work Mridula Satyamurti started this group and invited some friends to join. the group was named Kalakruti. In 2026, she registered it as a non-profit with the state of Massachusetts.

Mridula Satyamurti is a Massachusetts–based ceramic artist whose work focuses on figurative sculpture. Although her formal education and professional career are rooted in Chemistry, art has remained a lifelong passion and an integral part of her identity.

Throughout her artistic journey, Mridula has explored a wide range of media, including oil painting, watercolor, plaster, resin, and bronze. Her search for a medium that combined expressive freedom with a direct, hands-on creative process ultimately led her to ceramics. Today, ceramic sculpture serves as the primary focus of her studio practice.

Drawing inspiration from mythology, nature, and the human experience, she is particularly fascinated by the chimeric human-animal beings found in Hindu mythology.

In addition to her artistic practice, Mridula teaches at a local university. She continues to reside in Sharon, Massachusetts, with her husband and daughter, whose support and encouragement inspire her artistic pursuits.

I am particularly drawn to the rich visual language of Hindu mythology, where human-animal forms serve as powerful symbols of transformation, strength, wisdom, and spiritual connection. These chimeric figures allow me to explore themes of identity, duality, and the fluid boundaries between the natural and the mythological worlds.

Although my professional career is in science and academia, art has always been an essential part of my life. After working in a variety of materials, I found ceramics to be the medium that best supports my creative vision. Its tactile nature, versatility, and responsiveness allow me to engage directly with the sculptural process and bring my ideas to life.

Through my sculptures, I seek to create works that invite viewers to reflect on the stories, symbols, and connections that unite human experience across cultures and time. By blending the familiar with the fantastical, I hope to inspire curiosity, contemplation, and a sense of wonder.
