Sheetaltara

Biography

Sheetaltara is a self-taught Devanagari calligrapher and lettering artist based in Quincy, Massachusetts. Her journey began not in a formal studio but in the quiet space between curiosity and obsession — learning the ancient geometry of Devanagari entirely on her own terms, far from the traditional hubs of the art form.

That distance became her perspective. Removed from convention, she developed a practice that is deeply rooted in the classical script yet alive with a contemporary, cross-cultural sensibility. Her work spans traditional ink-on-paper calligraphy, digital type design, film-title lettering, installation art, and dual-script (Devanagari + Latin) typographic work.

She is perhaps best known for AksharKala Wari — an annual series of 21 original calligraphic artworks created in real time alongside the 700-year-old Pandharpur pilgrimage. Now in its eighth year, the series has reached millions and placed Devanagari calligraphy on a global stage. Her work has been published in international typography collections, exhibited in South Korea and India, and commissioned for film, music, weddings, NGOs, and sacred spaces.
